Testers loved this machine, which had a slimmer, more compact footprint and shorter stature than other models and therefore took up less room on our counters. Its cooking basket was roomy enough for 1 pound of food and had a completely nonstick coating. We also liked that the bottom of the basket could be removed for even deeper cleaning, if needed. Its digital controls and dial-operated menu made setting the time and temperature easy and intuitive. It stopped cooking as soon as the set time was up, and its drawer-like design allowed us to remove food without exposing our hands to the heating element.

How We Tested Toaster Ovens
We selected 10 toaster ovens, priced from about $40 to about $270, based on information about availability and popularity provided by major manufacturers. All but one of the toaster ovens had convection capability. We made toast and prepared Best Baked Potatoes, Simple Broiled Asparagus, Weeknight Roast Chicken, slice-and-bake sugar cookies, tuna melts, and frozen pepperoni pizza in each model. We used thermocouples to track the accuracy of each oven when set to 350 degrees over 2 hours, and tested how well various baking pans and sheets fit in each oven. Finally, we evaluated the user-friendliness of each oven, noting how intuitive the ovens were to operate and how easy they were to clean. We also made 365 slices of toast in our winning oven to evaluate its durability over a year of simulated use.
